Professionals Key to Remodel Success

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Remodeleze.com offers all the tools and resources you need to find a great professional contractor to help with your remodel. You can find pro’s in your area here >>

Here is an article from the Dayton Daily News talking aout the importance of a great professional:

Home improvement projects can either be a great experience or a terrible nightmare. Careful planning from start to finish, along with a reputable contractor, can help make your project successful.

While you may be able to handle some home remodeling tasks yourself, major projects may require professional help. Selecting a good contractor is essential to the project’s success.

When finding a home improvement contractor, get referrals from family and friends. You also can contact the Better Business Bureau for a list of more than 500 companies in the industry or reliability reports on ones you’re considering. Visit www.bbb.org or call (937) 222-5825 for more information.

The BBB also advises you:

• Get estimates. Request at least three bids based on the same project plan, materials, labor and completion time. Keep in mind the lowest bid isn’t always the best one. Consider the company’s reputation and materials used when making your decision.

• Obtain proper documentation. Be sure the contractor meets all licensing, bonding and insurance requirements and determine whether he or she will get necessary permits.

• Don’t pay the entire amount up front. Payment arrangements should be made as the job is completed. The final payment shouldn’t be due until the job is done to your satisfaction and has passed any necessary inspections.

• Get everything in writing. Don’t allow any work to start without a written contract, detailing the start and completion dates, all materials, cost and payment schedule, as well as the contractor’s license number and contact information.

You can find lots of ideas at the home improvement show today, Feb. 7, and Feb. 12-14 at the Dayton Exposition Center. Stop by the BBB’s booth for helpful tips on finding a home improvement contractor and what to look out for.

Color Therapy

Color Therapy

When it comes to remodeling houses and picking out the color scheme for your home design just how important is the color choice?
Color touches us on a very deep intuitive level. Whether you realize it or not, colors speak very loud to our subconscious and have a positive or negative reaction within 90 seconds.

Color psychology is a complex field of study and goes deep into the meaning of combining colors for a particular desired effect. The field of industrial psychology has a sub-field that studies only the psychology of color. It is no accident that Campbell’s soup has used the same colors on their labels for years and years.

The colors you select for a room will impact you on a very deep level every time you spend time in that room so consciously choosing the colors for your home design with this in mind is very important.

The Self-Satisfaction of Home Remodeling

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Home remodeling can be fun and exciting but much depends on how creative and determined you are. In fact, many choices and decisions have to be made and this is where the delays frequently happen. The next aspect of any remodeling project, outside or inside the home, is the expense related to renovation plans. In most instances you will have to set aside an adequate amount of money for the projected work and realize that to get the project completed, this budget must be adhered to.

When you think of the task ahead, it is often best to hire the services of a contractor who is experienced in the field and who therefore can give you the best workmanship that is in concert with your design requirements and budget. Due to the fact that material costs will take the largest chunk out of your budget, you therefore need to clarify whether or not you want the contractor to purchase the supplies and materials.

How to Start Your Remodel

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

How-To PhotoRemodeling your home can add significant value to your property and most home improvement jobs can be done by yourself to save money. Here is a simple list of basic steps you should take before you chose to remodel your home. You want to make sure you do all your research before remodeling your home, or else you could end up with a halfway-completed project.

First step in remodeling your home is planning out what exactly you want to remodel. This should be done before you call in any contractors. If you don’t know how you want your new house to look, it will be impossible to begin. Be very specific when planning what you want to remodel, such as the kitchen appliances, not just “remodel the kitchen”. The more specific you are the better of an idea you are going to have as to how much its going to cost, and where to begin. The best place to begin to look for home improvement ideas is on the internet or at a local hardware store. Seeing pictures of new homes and new home improvement projects often gives you an idea on things that you didn’t even know that you wanted for your home. Once again knowing the direction and exactly what you want to do to remodel your home is going to help you save money and time.

7 Home-Improvement Mistakes to Avoid

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

How-To PhotoSeven costly home-improvement mistakes:

• Don’t ignore safety. This goes for any home-improvement project. Simple precautions like wearing safety goggles, not overloading outlets and turning off breakers will only take a few minutes or a few extra bucks — but these steps can save you from disaster.

• Don’t forget about the subfloor. Laminate flooring needs an underlayment/vapor barrier for almost any surface upon which it is being installed. Not only will a subfloor protect flooring from moisture, it will also help with soundproofing. Hardwood floors need an even subfloor; use subfloor compound to ensure a level surface. If laying tile in a bathroom, cement backer board should be used underneath.

• Don’t skimp the grout sealer. You can spend a lot of time and money installing tile, but if you don’t properly seal the grout it can absorb water, dirt and other stains.

A Cottage Remodel

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Chris Gall’s house has expanded along with him. We’re not talking about his girth here, but his career.

Gall is an award-winning children’s book author and illustrator whose fourth book, “Dinotrux” — a parable about the prehistoric ancestors of today’s heavy trucks — is in development at DreamWorks as a 3-D animated feature film.

Life is good, and so, too, is the house that started as a Joesler cottage and has doubled in size.

Gall, a University of Arizona graduate, former advertising agency art director, commercial illustrator and, for a time, a stand-up comedian, bought the Foothills home in 1991.
